Coral reefs cover less than one percent of the ocean floor, yet they support roughly a quarter of all known marine species — an imbalance that has puzzled scientists for decades. A coral reef begins with tiny animals called polyps, which extract calcium from seawater and use it to build hard, cup-shaped skeletons around their soft bodies. Over thousands of years, generation after generation of polyps cements these skeletons together, forming the elaborate limestone structures that make up a reef. Living inside each polyp's tissue are microscopic algae called zooxanthellae, which photosynthesize sunlight and share the resulting nutrients with their coral host in exchange for a safe, sunlit place to live. This partnership allows coral to thrive even in nutrient-poor tropical waters where few other organisms could survive. The reef's maze of nooks, crevices, and branching structures then provides shelter, breeding grounds, and hunting territory for an enormous variety of fish, crustaceans, and mollusks. Because so many species depend on the reef's physical structure rather than on open water, removing even a small section of coral can ripple outward, affecting hundreds of species that never directly touch the coral itself.
-

Nobody had asked Devon to bring the good tent, but here he was, unrolling it in the pouring rain while his cousin Priya sat in the car pretending to check her phone. "You said you had this figured out," Priya called through the cracked window, her voice sharp as a whistle. Devon's jaw tightened. Ever since they were eight years old, Priya had never let him forget the time he'd gotten them lost on a hiking trail for three hours, and now, ten years later, she still treated every plan of his like a countdown to disaster.
"I do have it figured out," Devon muttered, wrestling a stake into the mud. "I just didn't figure on the sky falling apart."
By the time the tent finally stood — crooked, but standing — both cousins were soaked to the bone. Priya climbed out, took one look at the lopsided structure, and started laughing, a sound that cracked through the tension like sunlight through storm clouds. "It looks like a drunk elephant sat on it," she said.
"Better than sleeping in the car," Devon shot back, but he was grinning too.
They ducked inside together, dripping and shivering, and for the first time all weekend, neither one mentioned the hiking trail.

Public libraries across the country have long relied on late fees to encourage borrowers to return books on time, and supporters argue the practice teaches responsibility while ensuring that popular titles stay in circulation for other readers. When fines apply, they argue, patrons are far more likely to return items promptly so the next person on the waiting list isn't left waiting for months. Critics counter that late fees disproportionately harm low-income families, who may avoid the library altogether rather than risk fines they cannot afford, defeating the library's core mission of providing free access to information for everyone. Several cities that eliminated late fees, in fact, reported a rise in overall book returns, since former patrons no longer felt too embarrassed or indebted to walk back through the door. A growing number of library systems now propose a middle path: keep a modest fee only for materials that are severely overdue, such as by more than a month, while eliminating fines for books returned just a few days late. This approach, they argue, preserves accountability for chronic non-returners without punishing everyday readers for minor delays.
-
19. (쉬움) What is the main argument made by supporters of library late fees?

A. Late fees are too complicated for librarians to track.
B. Late fees can discourage low-income families from using the library at all.
C. Late fees make books wear out faster.
D. Late fees are rarely enforced in most libraries.
-
21. (보통) What kind of evidence does the passage use to support the claim that eliminating late fees can increase book returns?
A. A personal story from one librarian
B. Reports from cities that eliminated late fees and saw returns rise
C. A statistic from a national reading survey
D. A quotation from a well-known library director
-
22. (어려움) What compromise does the passage propose regarding library late fees?

B. Charging a modest fee only for materials that are severely overdue while waiving fines for minor delays
C. Doubling fines for all overdue books
D. Replacing late fees with mandatory community service
📖 정답 및 해설
- A — "unbothered by the fact that no student had ever won before"라는 문맥에서, audacious는 결과를 두려워하지 않고 '대담하고 자신감 있게 행동하는'이라는 뜻임을 알 수 있습니다.
- B — 판매원이 사고 이력이 없다고 보장했음에도 불구하고 "the dented bumper told a different story"라는 단서로 미루어, Marcus가 '의심하며 쉽게 믿지 않는' 태도를 보였음을 알 수 있습니다.
- B — "barely enough to feed their own families, let alone sell at market"라는 표현에서, meager한 수확량이 '양이 매우 적고 부족한' 상태임을 알 수 있습니다.
- B — "Rather than offering the polite, vague feedback"와 대조적으로 "explaining exactly which paragraphs needed to be rewritten"이라고 했으므로, candid는 불편하더라도 '솔직하고 직설적인'이라는 뜻입니다.
- B — 지문 전체는 산호초가 차지하는 면적은 작지만("less than one percent of the ocean floor") 형성 방식과 공생 관계 덕분에 매우 많은 해양 생물을 부양한다는 내용을 다루므로 이것이 중심 내용입니다.
- B — 지문에 "polyps... extract calcium from seawater and use it to build hard, cup-shaped skeletons"라고 명시되어 있으며, 이 골격들이 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 쌓여 산호초 구조를 이룹니다.
- C — 이 문장 바로 뒤에 "This partnership allows coral to thrive even in nutrient-poor tropical waters"라고 이어지므로, 조류와 산호의 공생 관계가 영양분이 부족한 바다에서도 산호가 살아남을 수 있는 이유를 설명하기 위한 것입니다.
- B — 마지막 문장 "removing even a small section of coral can ripple outward, affecting hundreds of species that never directly touch the coral itself"에서, 산호와 직접 닿지 않는 종들까지도 영향을 받을 수 있음을 추론할 수 있습니다.
- B — "elaborate limestone structures that make up a reef"라는 문맥에서, 수천 년에 걸쳐 정교하게 쌓인 구조를 묘사하고 있으므로 elaborate는 '복잡하고 정교한'이라는 뜻입니다.
- B — "You said you had this figured out," Priya called... her voice sharp as a whistle"와 "treated every plan of his like a countdown to disaster"라는 표현에서, Priya가 Devon에게 짜증과 불신을 느끼고 있음을 알 수 있습니다.
- C — "Ever since they were eight years old, Priya had never let him forget the time he'd gotten them lost on a hiking trail"라는 대목에서, 과거의 실수에서 비롯된 두 사촌 간의 오래된 갈등이 이번 여행에서 다시 불거지고 있음을 알 수 있습니다.
- B — 지문에서 "By the time the tent finally stood — crooked, but standing — both cousins were soaked to the bone. Priya climbed out... and started laughing"라고 이어지므로, 텐트가 완성된 직후 두 사람이 흠뻑 젖은 채 웃음을 터뜨리는 장면이 나옵니다.
- B — Priya의 웃음이 "cracked through the tension like sunlight through storm clouds"처럼 긴장을 깨뜨리고, 마지막에 "neither one mentioned the hiking trail"이라며 화해로 이어지므로, 함께 겪은 고난이 오래된 갈등을 녹인다는 주제를 뒷받침합니다.
- B — "unrolling it in the pouring rain", "wrestling a stake into the mud"
- C — "ten years later, she still treated every plan of his like a countdown to disaster"라는 표현은 현재 장면에서 벌어지는 긴장의 근원이 과거의 사건에 있다는 배경 정보를 제공하는 역할을 합니다.
- B — 두 사람이 함께 텐트 안으로 들어가며 "for the first time all weekend, neither one mentioned the hiking trail"이라고 마무리되고, Devon도 "grinning too"라고 묘사되어 있어 훈훈하고 가볍게 유머러스한, 화해를 암시하는 분위기로 끝납니다.
- B — 지문 초반에 "patrons are far more likely to return items promptly so the next person on the waiting list isn't left waiting for months"라고 명시되어 있어, 연체료 지지자들의 핵심 주장은 제때 반납을 유도한다는 것입니다.
- B — 지문에서 "late fees disproportionately harm low-income families, who may avoid the library altogether rather than risk fines they cannot afford"라고 비판하고 있습니다.
- B — 지문에 "Several cities that eliminated late fees, in fact, reported a rise in overall book returns"라고 명시되어 있어, 실제 도시들의 사례 보고를 근거로 사용하고 있습니다.
- B — 지문 후반부에 "keep a modest fee only for materials that are severely overdue... while eliminating fines for books returned just a few days late"라는 절충안이 제시되어 있습니다.
