Every time a smartphone shows a blue dot on a map, it is relying on a quiet conversation happening far overhead. The Global Positioning System, or GPS, is made up of more than two dozen satellites that circle the Earth at an altitude of about 20,000 kilometers. Each satellite continuously broadcasts a signal that includes the exact time it was sent and the satellite's precise location in orbit. A GPS receiver on the ground — inside a phone, a car, or a hiking device — listens for these signals from several satellites at once. Because radio signals travel at a known, constant speed, the receiver can calculate how far away each satellite is by measuring how long the signal took to arrive. Knowing the distance to just one satellite narrows your possible location to a giant sphere; knowing the distance to a second and third satellite narrows it further, until the overlapping spheres intersect at almost a single point. In practice, a receiver typically needs signals from at least four satellites to pinpoint a location accurately, including altitude. This process, called trilateration, happens continuously and automatically, which is why a map application can track your position as you move down the street.

Priya stood just inside the cafeteria doorway, holding her tray like a shield, scanning the sea of unfamiliar faces. It was only her third day at Lincoln Middle School, and the hallways still felt like a maze with no map. Every table seemed to already belong to someone, sewn together by years of inside jokes she had never heard.
She finally slid into an empty seat at the end of a table near the window, setting her tray down as quietly as possible, hoping no one would notice the new girl sitting alone.
"You're in my science class, right?" a voice asked. Priya looked up to see a boy with a paint-splattered hoodie sliding into the seat across from her. "You answered that question about density yesterday. Nobody ever gets that one right."
"Oh — yeah, that was me," Priya said, surprised her voice came out steadier than she felt.
"I'm Diego," he said, unwrapping his sandwich. "This place felt like a maze to me too, when I moved here in fifth grade. You get used to it."
For the first time since she'd walked through the front doors of Lincoln Middle, Priya felt the tight knot in her chest loosen, just a little. She smiled and asked him what else she should know about the school, and for the rest of lunch, the cafeteria didn't feel quite so enormous anymore.

Some education experts argue that middle schools should replace part of their required physical education time with classes focused on mindfulness and mental health. Supporters point out that rates of anxiety and stress among middle schoolers have risen sharply in recent years, and they argue that skills like breathing exercises, journaling, and stress management deserve as much classroom time as physical fitness. They also cite several pilot programs in which students who took weekly mindfulness classes reported feeling calmer and more focused during tests. Opponents counter that physical education already provides significant mental health benefits, since exercise is proven to reduce stress and improve mood, and they worry that cutting PE time could worsen childhood obesity rates at a time when students are already less active than previous generations. Rather than choosing one over the other, many school counselors propose a middle path: keeping the required number of PE minutes the same, but restructuring ten minutes of each PE class to include a brief mindfulness or breathing exercise before or after physical activity. This way, schools could address both physical and mental well-being without sacrificing either one.
-
What is the main claim made by supporters of replacing some PE time with mindfulness classes?
A. Mindfulness classes should completely replace physical education.
B. Mental health skills like breathing exercises and stress management deserve as much class time as physical fitness.

D. Physical education has no benefits for students.
-
What is one criticism opponents raise against reducing PE time?
A. Mindfulness classes are too expensive to offer.
B. Cutting PE time could worsen childhood obesity since students are already less active.
C. Teachers do not want to teach mindfulness.
D. Students already spend too much time exercising.
-
What kind of evidence does the passage use to support the claim that mindfulness classes help students?
A. A comparison to schools in other countries
B. Results from pilot programs showing students felt calmer and more focused
C. A quotation from a doctor
D. A statistic about school budgets
-
What compromise solution do school counselors propose in the passage?
A. Eliminating PE requirements entirely
B. Keeping PE minutes the same but adding a brief mindfulness exercise within each PE class
C. Replacing mindfulness classes with study hall
D. Requiring students to choose either PE or mindfulness class, but not both
- B — "Marcus was reluctant to speak in front of the whole team, since he still worried about saying the wrong thing"라는 문맥에서, 걱정 때문에 말하기를 꺼렸다는 내용으로 볼 때 reluctant는 '내키지 않아 하는, 주저하는'이라는 뜻임을 알 수 있습니다.
- C — "rehearsed for an hour every single day, even during her school vacations"라는 표현에서, diligent가 '꾸준하고 성실하게 노력하는'이라는 뜻임을 알 수 있습니다.
- A — "everyone's eyes were immediately drawn to him"이라는 문맥에서, conspicuous가 '눈에 띄는, 쉽게 알아볼 수 있는'이라는 뜻임을 알 수 있습니다.
- B — "worked to reconcile their differences, slowly rebuilding the trust they had lost"라는 문맥에서, reconcile이 '(다툰 후) 관계를 회복하다, 화해하다'라는 뜻임을 알 수 있습니다.
- B — 지문에 "Each satellite continuously broadcasts a signal that includes the exact time it was sent and the satellite's precise location in orbit"이라고 명시되어 있습니다.
- A — 지문은 "a receiver typically needs signals from at least four satellites to pinpoint a location accurately, including altitude"라고 설명하며, 세 개의 위성만으로는 고도를 포함한 정확한 위치를 파악하기에 충분하지 않음을 보여주기 위해 이 정보를 제시합니다.
- B — 마지막 문장 "This process, called trilateration, happens continuously and automatically, which is why a map application can track your position as you move down the street"에서, 거리 계산 과정이 계속 반복되기 때문에 위치 추적이 자동으로 이루어짐을 알 수 있습니다.
- B — "until the overlapping spheres intersect at almost a single point"라는 문맥에서, intersect가 '만나다, 교차하다'라는 뜻임을 알 수 있습니다.
- B — "holding her tray like a shield, scanning the sea of unfamiliar faces"라는 표현에서 Priya가 긴장하고 낯설어하는 감정을 느끼고 있음을 알 수 있습니다.
- A — Priya가 빈 테이블에 앉은 직후 "You're in my science class, right?"
- B — Diego의 대사 "This place felt like a maze to me too... You get used to it."
- B — "stood just inside the cafeteria doorway", "slid into an empty seat at the end of a table"
- B — "holding her tray like a shield"라는 직유는 Priya가 낯선 환경에서 방어적이고 취약한 감정을 느끼고 있음을 나타냅니다.
- A — 지문 초반 Priya의 고립감("scanning the sea of unfamiliar faces")과 결말의 연결감("the tight knot in her chest loosen")을 대조시켜, 짧은 시간 동안 일어난 감정 변화를 부각시킵니다.
- B — "the tight knot in her chest loosen"과 "She smiled"라는 표현에서 결말의 분위기가 따뜻하고 희망적임을 알 수 있습니다.
- B — 지문 초반에 "skills like breathing exercises, journaling, and stress management deserve as much classroom time as physical fitness"라고 명시되어 있습니다.
- B — 지문에서 "cutting PE time could worsen childhood obesity rates at a time when students are already less active"라고 비판하고 있습니다.
- B — "cite several pilot programs in which students who took weekly mindfulness classes reported feeling calmer and more focused during tests"
- B — 지문 후반부에 "keeping the required number of PE minutes the same, but restructuring ten minutes of each PE class to include a brief mindfulness or breathing exercise"라는 절충안이 제시되어 있으며, 이는 신체 건강과 정신 건강을 모두 챙기려는 해결책입니다.
