Volcanoes form when molten rock, called magma, rises up from deep within the Earth and breaks through weak points in the planet's crust. Most volcanoes occur along the edges of tectonic plates, the massive slabs of rock that make up the Earth's outer shell, where plates collide or pull apart and allow magma a path to the surface. Once magma reaches the surface, it is called lava, and the way it erupts depends largely on the type of magma involved. Thin, runny magma, which is low in a mineral compound called silica, allows gas bubbles to escape easily. Volcanoes fed by this kind of magma, such as those in Hawaii, tend to erupt gently, producing slow-moving rivers of lava rather than violent explosions. Thick, sticky magma, on the other hand, is high in silica and traps gas bubbles inside it. As pressure builds beneath the surface with nowhere to escape, it can be released suddenly and violently, hurling ash, rock, and gas high into the sky. Mount St. Helens, which erupted explosively in 1980, is a well-known example of this second type. Understanding magma composition helps scientists predict not just whether a volcano might erupt, but how dangerous that eruption is likely to be.
  1. 5. (쉬움) What is the main idea of the passage?
    A. Mount St. Helens erupted in 1980.
    B. The type of magma a volcano contains determines whether it erupts gently or explosively.

    B. They escape easily.
    C. They turn into ash.
    D. They cause the magma to cool instantly.
  3. 7. (보통) Why does the passage mention Mount St. Helens?

    C. To explain how tectonic plates move
    D. To compare Hawaii's climate to Washington's climate
  4. 8. (어려움) What can the reader conclude about why scientists study magma composition?

Backstage, Devon pressed his back against the cool brick wall and listened to the murmur of the crowd beyond the curtain, a sound that rolled over him like a wave he couldn't outswim. In twenty minutes, he was supposed to walk out and play the guitar solo he had practiced almost every day since March. Now his fingers felt frozen, as stiff as if they had been dipped in ice water.

"I can't do this," he whispered to his sister, Priya, who had come backstage to find him. "What if I forget everything?"

Priya crouched down next to him. "You won't forget — your hands know the song even when your brain is panicking. Just play the first note. The rest will follow."

Devon closed his eyes and pictured the opening chord. When the stage manager called his name, his legs moved before he had fully decided to let them. The lights were blinding, the silence enormous. He set his fingers on the strings and, trembling, played the first note. It wasn't perfect — he fumbled once in the middle — but he kept going, and by the final chord, the shaking in his hands had eased into something almost like calm. The applause afterward wasn't the loudest of the night, but to Devon, it felt like the whole auditorium was cheering just for him.

As translation apps become faster and more accurate, some students argue that they should be allowed to use them during foreign language class, especially while completing writing assignments. Supporters point out that professional translators and language learners in real workplaces use digital tools every day, so learning to use them responsibly is itself a valuable skill. A survey conducted by one language-learning organization found that students who used translation apps to check their work, rather than to generate it entirely, made fewer grammar mistakes over time. Opponents, however, warn that unrestricted use of translation apps can prevent students from developing the very skills the class is meant to teach, since typing a sentence into an app and copying the result requires no real understanding of grammar or vocabulary. If students never struggle through translating on their own, they may never build the mental habits needed to think in a new language. A reasonable middle ground, proposed by several language teachers, is to allow translation apps only during the revision stage of an assignment, after students have first attempted the writing entirely on their own.
  1. 19. (쉬움) What is the main claim made by supporters of allowing translation apps in foreign language class?
    A. Translation apps should replace foreign language teachers.
    B. Students should be allowed to use translation apps, since learning to use them responsibly is a valuable skill.
    C. Foreign language classes should be eliminated from school schedules.
    D. Translation apps are more accurate than human translators.
  2. 20. (보통) According to the passage, what is one criticism opponents raise against allowing translation apps?
    A. Translation apps are too expensive for most students to access.
    B. Unrestricted use can prevent students from developing real understanding of grammar and vocabulary.
    C. Translation apps often crash during class time.
    D. Teachers do not know how to use translation apps themselves.
  3. 21. (보통) What kind of evidence does the passage use to support the claim that translation apps can reduce grammar mistakes?
    A. A personal anecdote from one teacher
    B. Results from a survey conducted by a language-learning organization
    C. A quotation from a professional translator
    D. A comparison to other countries' education systems
  4. 22. (어려움) What compromise solution does the passage propose to address both perspectives on translation apps?
    A. Banning translation apps from school entirely
    B. Allowing translation apps only during the revision stage, after students first write on their own
    C. Requiring students to pay for premium translation app subscriptions
    D. Replacing written assignments with oral exams

  10. B — "pressed his back against the cool brick wall", "his fingers felt frozen, as stiff as if they had been dipped in ice water"라는 표현에서 Devon이 극도로 긴장하고 몸이 굳어 있음을 알 수 있습니다.
  11. B — 이 이야기의 갈등은 외부의 적이 아니라 Devon 자신의 두려움과 자기 의심입니다 — 인물 내면에서 벌어지는 '인물 대 자신(character vs. self)' 갈등입니다.
  12. B — 지문에서 "his legs moved before he had fully decided to let them"이라고 명시하고 있으므로, 이름이 불리자마자 몸이 먼저 반응해 걸어 나갔음을 알 수 있습니다.
  13. B — Priya의 대사 "Just play the first note. The rest will follow."

  19. B — 지문 초반에 "learning to use them responsibly is itself a valuable skill"이라고 명시되어 있어, 번역 앱 사용법을 배우는 것이 가치 있는 기술이라는 것이 지지자들의 핵심 주장입니다.
  20. B — 지문에서 "unrestricted use of translation apps can prevent students from developing the very skills the class is meant to teach"라고 비판하고 있습니다.
  21. B — 지문에 "A survey conducted by one language-learning organization found that students who used translation apps to check their work... made fewer grammar mistakes"라고 명시되어 있어, 설문조사(survey) 결과라는 근거를 사용하고 있습니다.
  22. B — 지문 후반부에 "allow translation apps only during the revision stage of an assignment, after students have first attempted the writing entirely on their own"이라는 해결책이 제시되어 있으며, 이는 두 입장을 절충하는 방안입니다.
