For centuries, people wondered how a single honeybee could tell the rest of its hive where to find food, sometimes more than a mile away. In the 1940s, an Austrian scientist named Karl von Frisch discovered the answer: bees "talk" to each other through a special dance. When a forager bee returns to the hive after finding a good source of nectar, it performs a pattern of movements called the waggle dance. The bee walks in a straight line while shaking its body rapidly, then circles back to repeat the pattern. The angle of the straight line, compared to the position of the sun, tells other bees the direction they need to fly. The length of the waggle tells them how far away the food is — a longer waggle means a longer distance. Remarkably, the hive is completely dark, so the other bees cannot see the dance; they follow it by touch and by sensing the vibrations. Von Frisch's discovery, which won him a Nobel Prize in 1973, revealed that insects most people assumed were simple creatures were actually capable of a surprisingly complex form of communication.

Mara stood at the edge of the pool, her fingers curled tightly around the metal railing. The other swimmers in the final heat stretched and shook out their arms, looking as calm as if they were about to take a nap instead of race for the regional title. Mara's stomach twisted. She had trained for this moment every morning before school for six months, dragging herself out of bed while the sky was still black, but now that it was finally here, her legs felt like they belonged to someone else.

"You don't have to be fearless," her coach had told her that morning. "You just have to start."

The starting buzzer cracked through the air, and Mara's body moved before her mind caught up, diving into the cold water in a smooth arc. By the second lap, the fear had melted into something else — a fierce, focused rhythm that carried her stroke after stroke. She touched the wall and looked up at the scoreboard, gasping. Second place. Not first, but a personal best by nearly two seconds.

Climbing out of the pool, Mara realized her hands had stopped shaking. She hadn't needed to feel fearless after all. She had only needed to start.

Every June, many middle schools send students home with a list of required summer reading books. Supporters of this practice argue that it prevents the "summer slide," the well-documented drop in reading skills that occurs when students go months without picking up a book. Studies have shown that students who read consistently over the summer return to school in the fall with stronger vocabularies and reading comprehension than those who do not. Critics, however, argue that mandatory reading lists can backfire, turning an activity that should be enjoyable into another item on a checklist of chores. When students are forced to read a book they did not choose, they may finish it out of obligation rather than genuine interest, which could make them less likely to pick up a book voluntarily in the future. A better solution, some educators suggest, is to give students a wide range of options to choose from, rather than a single mandatory title. This approach preserves the proven benefits of summer reading while still allowing students the freedom to find a book that truly excites them.
What is the main argument presented by supporters of mandatory summer reading lists?
    A. It helps students make new friends.
    B. It prevents a decline in reading skills over the summer.
    C. It reduces the number of standardized tests.
    D. It saves schools money on textbooks.
According to the passage, what is one criticism critics raise against mandatory summer reading lists?
    A. The books on the lists are too short.
    B. Forcing students to read a book they didn't choose can make reading feel like a chore.
    C. Summer reading lists are too expensive for schools to provide.
    D. Teachers do not have time to grade summer reading assignments.
What kind of evidence does the passage use to support the claim that summer reading prevents the "summer slide"?
    A. A personal anecdote from one student
    B. Results from research studies
    C. A quotation from a famous author
    D. A comparison to reading habits in other countries
What compromise solution does the passage propose to address both perspectives on summer reading?
    A. Eliminating summer reading requirements entirely
    B. Giving students a range of book options to choose from instead of a single required title
    C. Requiring students to read only nonfiction books
    D. Replacing summer reading with a summer writing assignment

  1. B — 문장에서 "examined every inch of the room, no matter how small"(아무리 작아도 방의 구석구석을 살폈다)라는 단서를 통해 meticulous가 '매우 꼼꼼하고 세심한'이라는 뜻임을 알 수 있습니다.
  6. B — 지문에 "The angle of the straight line... tells other bees the direction they need to fly"라고 명시되어 있습니다.
  8. B — 마지막 문장 "insects most people assumed were simple creatures were actually capable of a surprisingly complex form of communication"에서, 발견 이전에는 사람들이 곤충을 단순한 생물로 여겼음을 알 수 있습니다.
  9. A — "a forager bee returns to the hive after finding a good source of nectar"라는 문맥에서, forager가 '먹이를 찾아다니는 벌'을 의미함을 추론할 수 있습니다.
  10. B — "her stomach twisted"와 "her legs felt like they belonged to someone else"라는 표현에서 Mara가 극도로 긴장하고 있음을 알 수 있습니다.
  12. B — 지문에서 "Mara's body moved before her mind caught up, diving into the cold water"라고 명시하고 있으므로, 신호와 동시에 몸이 먼저 반응해 물에 뛰어들었음을 알 수 있습니다.
  13. B — 코치의 대사 "You don't have to be fearless. You just have to start."와 마지막 문단의 "She hadn't needed to feel fearless after all."
  14. B — "stood at the edge of the pool", "final heat", "starting buzzer", "diving into the cold water"
  19. B — 지문 초반에 "it prevents the 'summer slide,' the well-documented drop in reading skills"라고 명시되어 있어, 여름방학 독서 능력 저하를 막는 것이 지지자들의 핵심 주장입니다.
  20. B — 지문에서 "mandatory reading lists can backfire, turning an activity that should be enjoyable into another item on a checklist of chores"라고 비판하고 있습니다.
  21. B — 지문에 "Studies have shown that students who read consistently over the summer return to school... with stronger vocabularies and reading comprehension"이라고 명시되어 있어, 연구 결과(studies)라는 근거를 사용하고 있습니다.
  22. B — 지문 후반부에 "give students a wide range of options to choose from, rather than a single mandatory title"라는 해결책이 제시되어 있으며, 이는 여름 독서의 장점은 유지하면서 학생의 선택권도 보장하는 절충안입니다.
