The Reading Corner

Devon groaned when Ms. Alvarez posted the reading-buddy assignments on the board. Every Tuesday afternoon, eighth graders would spend forty-five minutes reading with a second grader from the elementary wing. Devon's partner was a boy named Milo, who could not sit still for longer than a sentence.

During their first session, Milo flipped through the picture book faster than Devon could read the words aloud, then wandered off to inspect the pencil sharpener. "This is a waste of time," Devon muttered, glancing at the clock every few minutes, watching the hands crawl like a snail dragging itself across the face.

Weeks passed the same way — restless questions, half-finished pages, Devon's patience wearing thin as old fabric. Then one Tuesday, Milo stopped mid-page and pointed at a word. "Is that like my name? M-I-L-O?" he asked, sounding out each letter slowly. Devon leaned closer and nodded, surprised by the small flicker of pride in Milo's face.

After that, something shifted. Milo began saving his favorite books for their sessions, and Devon started arriving early, curious what strange new picture book Milo would drag off the shelf. By spring, Milo could read whole sentences on his own, sounding out tricky words instead of guessing wildly.

On the last day of the program, Milo hugged Devon's arm and said, "You're the best reading partner ever." Devon walked to the bus that afternoon smiling, realizing that teaching Milo to read had somehow taught Devon something too — patience wasn't a burden to carry, but a bridge that had quietly connected them both.

Trained to Help: How Service Dogs Learn Their Jobs

Service dogs undergo years of specialized training before they are matched with a person who has a disability. Unlike pets, these dogs must learn to perform specific tasks reliably, even in crowded or noisy environments.

Training usually begins when a puppy is only a few weeks old. Puppy raisers, often volunteers, teach the dog basic obedience and expose it to elevators, buses, shopping malls, and other public places so the dog grows comfortable working anywhere. Around one year of age, the dog moves on to advanced training with a professional trainer, who teaches specialized skills based on the future handler's needs.

For a person who is blind, a guide dog learns to stop at curbs, navigate around obstacles, and even disobey a command if following it would put the handler in danger — a skill trainers call "intelligent disobedience." For a person with a mobility impairment, a service dog might learn to open doors, retrieve dropped items, or pull a wheelchair. Dogs assisting people with diabetes or epilepsy can be trained to detect subtle changes in scent that signal a medical emergency and alert their handler before symptoms become severe.

Only about half of the dogs that begin training complete the full program successfully, since the work demands unusual focus and calmness. Dogs that graduate typically work with their handler for eight to ten years, providing independence that changes their handler's daily life.

    B. Teach basic obedience and expose puppies to public places
    C. Train dogs exclusively for police work
    D. Select which puppies will remain household pets
Why does the author most likely include the detail about "intelligent disobedience"?

    B. To illustrate how guide dogs are trained to prioritize their handler's safety over simply following commands
    C. To explain why guide dogs are afraid of crossing streets
    D. To argue that guide dogs should never obey commands
What can be concluded about the overall importance of the training process described in the passage?

    C. Most dogs that begin training successfully complete the full program.
    D. Service dogs are trained the same way regardless of their future handler's needs.

  1. B — 첫 문단에서 Devon이 "groaned"하며 "This is a waste of time,"라고 말하는 모습에서, 이 활동에 대한 좌절감과 회의적인 태도를 알 수 있습니다.
  2. B — 글의 마지막 부분 "patience wasn't a burden to carry, but a bridge that had quietly connected them both"라는 표현은 Devon과 Milo 사이에 형성된 유대감과 연결을 상징적으로 나타냅니다.
  3. B — "Devon leaned closer and nodded, surprised by the small flicker of pride in Milo's face"라는 문장에서, Milo가 자신의 이름과 비슷한 단어를 발견한 직후 Devon이 가까이 다가가 고개를 끄덕이는 장면이 이어짐을 알 수 있습니다.
  5. A — "patience wearing thin as old fabric"라는 직유는 낡은 천이 점점 닳아 약해지듯, Devon의 인내심이 점점 유지하기 힘들어지고 있음을 비유적으로 표현한 것입니다.
  6. B — "the small flicker of pride in Milo's face"라는 문맥에서, flicker는 짧고 순간적으로 나타났다 사라지는 모습을 의미하므로 '잠깐 스치는 기색'이라는 뜻입니다.
  8. B — "Puppy raisers... teach the dog basic obedience and expose it to elevators, buses, shopping malls, and other public places"
  9. B — "even disobey a command if following it would put the handler in danger"
  10. B — 강아지가 몇 주밖에 안 된 시기부터 시작해 1년 이상 이어지는 훈련 과정과 "Only about half of the dogs that begin training complete the full program successfully"라는 내용은 도우미견이 안전하고 신뢰할 수 있게 주인을 돕기 위해서는 이러한 엄격한 훈련이 반드시 필요함을 보여줍니다.
  11. B — "these dogs must learn to perform specific tasks reliably, even in crowded or noisy environments"라는 문맥에서 reliably는 '일관되고 믿을 수 있게'라는 뜻으로 쓰였습니다.
Part B 근거 문장: "For a person with a mobility impairment, a service dog might learn to open doors, retrieve dropped items, or pull a wheelchair."
  18. A — 주어 "My little sister"는 단수이므로 동사도 단수형인 "was"와 일치해야 합니다 (주어-동사 수 일치 오류).
  19. A — "Dad and I"가 주어이므로 목적격 대명사 "me"가 아닌 주격 대명사 "I"를 써야 합니다.
