The Letters in the Cedar Box

The wind had been rattling the shutters for an hour before the lights finally gave out. Marisol grabbed her older brother Diego's arm the moment the house went black, and outside the rain hurled itself against the windows like something desperate to get inside. "Mom keeps candles in the attic," Diego said, reaching for the flashlight app on his dead phone before remembering it wouldn't work without power. "Emergency box, top shelf."

They climbed the pull-down ladder together, Marisol close behind him, flinching at every roll of thunder. The attic smelled of cardboard and cedar. Diego found the candles quickly, but Marisol's foot bumped an old shoebox tucked behind a stack of winter coats, and it toppled, spilling a bundle of envelopes across the floorboards.

"Careful," Diego said, but he was already crouching beside her, tilting one open in the dim light from the single lit candle. The handwriting was small and slanted — their grandmother's, from before either of them was born. Letter after letter was addressed to a soldier stationed overseas, and signed only, Waiting, but not idle — Abuela.

Marisol had only ever known her grandmother as a quiet woman who knitted in the corner of family gatherings. She had never pictured her twenty years old, running a diner alone while her husband was away, writing letters full of plans for a bakery she'd eventually open. "She sounds like she wasn't afraid of anything," Marisol whispered.

Diego held the candle closer. "Maybe that's where you get it from," he said, and for the first time all night, Marisol wasn't thinking about the storm at all.

Should Phones Be Banned All Day at School?

Many middle schools already prohibit smartphones during class, but a growing number of districts are considering a stricter rule: banning phone use completely, even during lunch and passing periods. Supporters of a full-day ban argue that phones distract students from face-to-face conversation and contribute to anxiety, especially when students compare themselves to peers on social media. A 2022 study of over 40 schools found that students at schools with all-day phone bans reported feeling less lonely and had more in-person conversations during lunch.

Opponents counter that a complete ban ignores the real benefits phones provide, such as allowing students to contact parents quickly in an emergency or coordinate rides after school. They argue that banning phones only during instructional time already solves the main distraction problem without removing a tool that many families rely on for safety and communication.

A possible compromise is a system some schools have already adopted: phones are locked in individual pouches at the start of the day and unlocked only at dismissal, except in the case of a verified emergency communicated through the front office. This approach removes the temptation to check phones throughout the day while still allowing schools to reach a parent immediately if something urgent arises.
What is the main argument made by supporters of a full-day phone ban?
    A. Phones are too expensive for most families to afford.
    B. Phones distract students from face-to-face interaction and can increase anxiety.
    C. Phones should be banned only during standardized testing.
    D. Teachers should be allowed to use phones but students should not.
According to the passage, what is one concern opponents have about a full-day phone ban?
    A. It removes a tool families rely on for safety and communication, like contacting parents in an emergency.
    B. It would make students perform worse on tests.
    C. It would cost schools too much money to enforce.
    D. It would require hiring additional teachers.
What kind of evidence does the passage use to support the claim that all-day bans reduce loneliness?
    A. An interview with a school principal
    B. A study of over 40 schools
    C. A personal opinion from a parent
    D. A quotation from a phone manufacturer
What compromise does the passage describe?
    A. Allowing phones only during lunch periods
    B. Locking phones in pouches for the day, with exceptions for verified emergencies
    C. Banning phones only for students who misuse them
    D. Giving teachers control over student phones permanently
As used in the passage, the word "prohibit" most nearly means —
    A. to allow freely
    B. to forbid or not permit
    C. to encourage
    D. to ignore
  6. 12. (보통 · 서술형 2점, Part A/B) Part A: What is one reason supporters give for banning phones all day? Part B: Which sentence from the passage best supports your answer to Part A?

  2. B — 편지는 젊은 시절 할머니가 남편이 전쟁터에 나간 동안 혼자 식당을 운영하고 빵집을 열 계획을 세우던 대담하고 독립적인 모습을 보여줍니다("running a diner alone... writing letters full of plans for a bakery").
  3. B — "it toppled, spilling a bundle of envelopes across the floorboards"
  6. B — "flinching at every roll of thunder"
  7. B — "phones distract students from face-to-face conversation and contribute to anxiety"
  8. A — "a tool that many families rely on for safety and communication"
  9. B — "A 2022 study of over 40 schools found that..."
  10. B — 지문 마지막 부분 "phones are locked in individual pouches at the start of the day and unlocked only at dismissal, except in the case of a verified emergency"에서 절충안을 확인할 수 있습니다.
  11. B — "Many middle schools already prohibit smartphones during class"라는 문맥에서, prohibit은 '금지하다, 허용하지 않다'라는 뜻으로 쓰였습니다.
Part B 근거 문장: "phones distract students from face-to-face conversation and contribute to anxiety, especially when students compare themselves to peers on social media."
  19. A — "Jamal and I"가 주어(주격)이므로 목적격 대명사 "me"가 아닌 주격 대명사 "I"를 써야 합니다.
