Learning to Run
The first time I tried to run a mile without stopping, I made it four hundred meters before my lungs felt like they were folded in half. I stood there on the track, hands on my knees, and told myself this was proof that I simply wasn't built for running. My older cousin Renata, who had run three marathons, just laughed when I told her I was quitting. "Everybody's engine stalls at first," she said. "You don't throw away the car."
I signed up anyway for the Riverbend 5K, a charity run benefiting the children's hospital, mostly because my name was already on the list before I could talk myself out of it. For six weeks I ran three mornings a week, and for six weeks I was convinced every single run that today would be the day I finally admitted defeat. My calves burned. My splits were embarrassingly slow. But each week, the four hundred meters that had once flattened me stretched into eight hundred, then a mile, then two.
On race morning, fog sat low over the river, and four hundred runners in matching purple shirts shuffled toward the starting banner. I did not feel ready. I felt like a small boat pushed out onto water far too wide for it. But when the horn sounded, my legs simply knew what six weeks had taught them, and I moved forward with the crowd.
I crossed the finish line in thirty-four minutes, not fast by anyone's measure but my own. Renata was right there at the end, holding up a hand-lettered sign with my name misspelled on it. I didn't care. My engine, it turned out, had never been stalled — it had only needed six weeks to warm up.

Should Community Service Be Required to Graduate?
Many middle schools across the country are considering whether students should be required to complete a set number of community-service hours — often between ten and twenty — before they can graduate. Some districts already require this for high school graduation, and supporters want middle schools to adopt similar policies earlier. Supporters argue that mandatory service hours expose students to real-world needs they might never encounter otherwise, and that volunteering builds empathy, teamwork, and civic responsibility at an age when habits are still forming. A 2022 study by a national youth-development organization found that students who volunteered regularly in middle school were more likely to continue volunteering as adults.
Opponents counter that forcing students to volunteer defeats the purpose of service, which should come from genuine willingness rather than obligation. They also point out that not every family has reliable transportation to volunteer sites, which could unfairly burden students from lower-income households who already juggle after-school jobs or caring for younger siblings.
A possible compromise would allow students to fulfill the requirement through a wider range of options, including service projects completed during the school day, virtual volunteering, or projects designed and led by students themselves. Under this model, every student would still complete meaningful service, but families with limited time or transportation would no longer be excluded.
-
What is the main argument made by supporters of a mandatory community-service requirement?

B. Volunteering builds empathy, teamwork, and civic responsibility
C. All students already enjoy volunteering

A. Volunteering is not educational
B. Not every family has reliable transportation, which could burden lower-income students
C. Service hours take too long to track
D. Students dislike helping their communities
-
What kind of evidence does the passage use to support the claim that middle-school volunteering has lasting effects?
A. A personal anecdote from a teacher
B. A study by a national youth-development organization
C. A quotation from a school principal
D. A comparison between two countries
-
What compromise does the passage describe as a "middle ground"?
A. Eliminating the service requirement altogether
B. Allowing students to fulfill the requirement through school-day projects, virtual volunteering, or student-led projects
C. Requiring only students with transportation to volunteer
D. Increasing the number of required hours to fifty

- B — "mostly because my name was already on the list before I could talk myself out of it"라는 문장에서, 서술자가 스스로 마음을 바꾸기 전에 서둘러 등록했다는 것은 자신의 결심이 흔들릴 수 있음을 스스로 알고 있었다는 뜻입니다.
- B — 사촌 Marisol의 말 "Everybody's engine stalls at first... You don't throw away the car"와 마지막 문장 "My engine, it turned out, had never been stalled"에서, 엔진은 서술자의 내적 힘과 성장 가능성을 상징함을 알 수 있습니다.
- B — "when the horn sounded, my legs simply knew what six weeks had taught them, and I moved forward with the crowd"
- B — "volunteering builds empathy, teamwork, and civic responsibility at an age when habits are still forming"
- B — "not every family has reliable transportation to volunteer sites, which could unfairly burden students from lower-income households"
- B — "A 2022 study by a national youth-development organization found that..."
- B — 지문 마지막 부분 "allow students to fulfill the requirement through a wider range of options, including service projects completed during the school day, virtual volunteering, or projects designed and led by students themselves"에서 절충안을 확인할 수 있습니다.
Part B 근거 문장: "not every family has reliable transportation to volunteer sites, which could unfairly burden students from lower-income households who already juggle after-school jobs or caring for younger siblings."
- A — A는 분사구(including...)
- A — "My best friend and I"가 주어이므로 목적격 대명사 "me"가 아닌 주격 대명사 "I"를 써야 합니다.
- A — "the class's total"처럼 학급의 소유를 나타내려면 아포스트로피(')를 붙여야 하므로 "classes"를 "class's"로 고쳐야 합니다 (소유격 오류).
