The Blue Schwinn

The garage still smelled like sawdust and motor oil, exactly the way Grandpa Lou always kept it. Iris hadn't been back since the funeral, and she almost turned around twice before pushing open the side door. Dust drifted through a shaft of afternoon light, landing on an old bicycle propped against the far wall — faded blue paint, a cracked leather seat, one flat tire.

She wheeled it out anyway, coughing at the dust cloud it kicked up. When she flipped the bike upside down to check the chain, something crinkled inside the torn seat cushion. Iris peeled back the leather and found a folded photograph, soft and yellowed at the edges: a much younger Grandpa Lou, grinning beside this same bicycle, one arm slung around a girl who looked exactly like Iris's mother at seventeen.

On the back, in handwriting she recognized from birthday cards, someone had written: Summer of '74. Told her I'd teach her to ride if it killed me. It almost did.

Iris sat down right there on the concrete floor, the photograph balanced on her knee. She had never once pictured her grandfather as a teenager, nervous and hopeful, running alongside someone learning to balance. She had only known him old, quiet, patient with her own wobbling attempts to learn the very same skill fifteen years later on this very same bike.

By the time her mother called her in for dinner, Iris had already decided. She was going to fix the tire, oil the chain, and learn to ride it properly — not because she needed a bicycle, but because some part of her grandfather was still leaning against the seat, ready to run alongside her one more time.

Should Coding Be a Required Subject?

As technology becomes part of nearly every career, some educators argue that all middle school students should be required to take a coding class, just as they are required to take math or science. Supporters point out that computer science jobs are among the fastest-growing in the country, and that learning to code teaches valuable skills like breaking large problems into smaller steps and thinking logically through cause and effect. A 2023 survey of hiring managers found that even in fields unrelated to technology, employers increasingly value candidates who understand basic coding concepts.

However, critics argue that mandating coding for every student overlooks the reality that not every student is interested in a technology career, and that schools already struggle to fit essential subjects into a limited school day. They suggest that instead of a required course, schools should offer coding as an elective, alongside other career-focused electives like culinary arts or graphic design, so that interested students can pursue it without forcing it on everyone.

A middle ground exists: several school districts have begun integrating basic coding concepts into existing math and science classes rather than creating an entirely new required course. This approach introduces every student to foundational computer science thinking without demanding an additional class period, while still allowing students with a strong interest to pursue coding electives in later grades.
What is the main argument made by supporters of requiring coding classes?
    A. Coding is easier to learn than math or science.
    B. Coding teaches valuable skills and prepares students for a growing job market.
    C. All students want to become computer programmers.
    D. Coding classes should replace physical education.
According to the passage, what is one criticism critics have of making coding mandatory?
    A. Coding is too easy for most students.
    B. Not every student is interested in a technology career, and school schedules are already full.
    C. Coding classes cost too much money to run.
    D. Coding is not useful in any career.
What kind of evidence does the passage use to support the claim that employers value coding skills?
    A. A personal story from a student
    B. A survey of hiring managers
    C. A quotation from a computer science textbook
    D. Historical data from the 1990s
What compromise does the passage describe as a "middle ground"?
    A. Making coding required only for high school students
    B. Integrating basic coding concepts into existing math and science classes
    C. Eliminating computer science electives entirely
    D. Requiring all teachers to learn coding
As used in the passage, the word "mandating" most nearly means —
    A. suggesting as optional
    B. officially requiring
    C. completely forbidding
    D. gradually reducing
  6. 12. (보통 · 서술형 2점, Part A/B) Part A: What is one reason critics give for NOT requiring coding classes for all students? Part B: Which sentence from the passage best supports your answer to Part A?

  1. B — 사진과 손글씨 메모를 발견한 후 "She had never once pictured her grandfather as a teenager, nervous and hopeful"라는 문장에서, 이 발견이 할아버지의 젊은 시절 모습을 새롭게 깨닫게 해주었음을 알 수 있습니다.
  3. C — "Iris sat down right there on the concrete floor, the photograph balanced on her knee"
  4. B — 낡은 자전거 속에서 발견한 사진 한 장이 할아버지와의 정서적 연결을 되살리고, 마지막 문장 "some part of her grandfather was still leaning against the seat"에서 평범한 물건 속에 남아있는 가족의 기억이라는 주제를 전달합니다.
  6. B — "her own wobbling attempts to learn the very same skill"
  7. B — 지문 초반 "learning to code teaches valuable skills... computer science jobs are among the fastest-growing"라는 부분에서 지지자들의 핵심 주장을 확인할 수 있습니다.
  8. B — "not every student is interested in a technology career, and that schools already struggle to fit essential subjects into a limited school day"라는 문장에서 비판의 핵심을 알 수 있습니다.
  9. B — "A 2023 survey of hiring managers found that..."
  10. B — 지문 마지막 부분 "several school districts have begun integrating basic coding concepts into existing math and science classes"에서 절충안을 확인할 수 있습니다.
Part B 근거 문장: "not every student is interested in a technology career, and that schools already struggle to fit essential subjects into a limited school day."
  19. A — "My partner and I"가 주어이므로 목적격 대명사 "me"가 아닌 주격 대명사 "I"를 써야 합니다.
