The Silk Road Between Us
Elena's stomach sank when Ms. Patterson read the partner list aloud: "Elena and Tomas." Tomas had transferred from Poland only three weeks earlier, and so far he had barely said ten words in class. Their assignment — a poster explaining the ancient Silk Road trade routes — was due Friday, and Elena wasn't sure how they were supposed to plan anything together.
At lunch, Elena tried anyway. She talked slowly about camels and merchants and silk, but Tomas just nodded, his eyes uncertain. Every sentence she offered seemed to drop between them and disappear, like coins tossed into a well with no bottom.
Then Tomas reached into his backpack and pulled out a battered sketchbook. Without a word, he began drawing: a line of camels winding across a desert, tiny bundles of silk balanced on their backs, an arrow pointing toward a walled city. Elena leaned closer, understanding immediately. She grabbed a pencil and added her own mark — a ship, sailing toward the same city from the opposite direction.
For the rest of lunch, neither of them said much. They didn't need to. Tomas sketched merchants trading spices; Elena sketched coins changing hands. Line by line, the pencil became a bridge between them, carrying ideas across the silence that words couldn't cross.
By Friday, their poster was covered in careful drawings, each one labeled in Elena's neat handwriting and Tomas's careful block letters. When they presented it together, Tomas spoke only a few hesitant words — but his drawings said everything else.

The Long Flight of the Monarch
Every fall, millions of monarch butterflies leave their summer homes across the United States and Canada and begin an extraordinary journey. Guided by instinct rather than experience, they travel as far as 3,000 miles to reach the oyamel fir forests of central Mexico, where they spend the winter clustered together on tree branches by the millions.
What makes this migration especially remarkable is that no single butterfly completes the entire round trip. It takes four or five generations of monarchs to finish the full annual cycle — the butterflies that arrive in Mexico each winter are the great-great-grandchildren of the ones that left the year before, yet they somehow find their way to the very same forests.
Scientists have spent decades trying to understand how monarchs manage this feat. Researchers place tiny, lightweight tags on the wings of individual butterflies, each one printed with a unique code. When a tagged monarch is found — sometimes thousands of miles from where it started — volunteers report the location, helping scientists map the insects' routes. Other researchers study the position of the sun and Earth's magnetic field, which monarchs may use like a built-in compass. By combining these methods, scientists have slowly pieced together a clearer picture of one of the animal kingdom's most astonishing journeys.

C. To explain why scientists cannot study monarch butterflies
D. To compare monarchs to other migrating animals

- C — "She grabbed a pencil and added her own mark — a ship, sailing toward the same city from the opposite direction."
- B — "he spoke only a few hesitant words"
- C — "they travel as far as 3,000 miles"
- B — "Researchers place tiny, lightweight tags on the wings of individual butterflies... helping scientists map the insects' routes"
- B — "one of the animal kingdom's most astonishing journeys"
Part B 근거 문장: "Researchers place tiny, lightweight tags on the wings of individual butterflies, each one printed with a unique code."
- A — 주어 "My aunt and uncle"는 복수이므로 동사도 복수형인 "were"와 일치해야 합니다 (주어-동사 수 일치 오류).
- A — "My little brother and I"가 주어이므로 목적격 대명사 "me"가 아닌 주격 대명사 "I"를 써야 합니다.
