The Ninth Day
Zara had wanted a dog her whole life, but when her family finally brought one home from the shelter, he wasn't the bouncing, tail-wagging puppy she had pictured. Ranger was a medium-sized mutt with graying fur around his muzzle, and the moment they stepped through the front door, he pressed himself flat against the wall, as still as a shadow, and refused to move.
"He's scared," Zara's mom said. "The shelter told us he was found wandering alone for weeks before someone brought him in. Give him time."
Time was not something Zara was good at giving. She had imagined a dog who would run to greet her after school and curl up beside her on the couch. Instead, for the first few days, Ranger hid under the kitchen table whenever anyone entered the room.
Zara tried something new. Every afternoon, she sat cross-legged on the kitchen floor, several feet from the table, and simply read her book out loud. She didn't reach for him. She didn't call his name. She just let her voice fill the quiet kitchen.
On the ninth day, Ranger crept out from under the table and lay down two feet from her sneakers. On the fourteenth day, he rested his chin on her knee. By the end of the month, he waited by the door each afternoon, ears perked, tail sweeping the floor whenever her key turned in the lock.
Zara finally understood that trust, like water, could not be poured in all at once. It had to fill slowly, drop by drop, until it finally reached the top.

Should Middle School Students Use Calculators on All Math Tests?
Many math teachers currently allow calculators only on certain tests, requiring students to solve most problems by hand. Some parents and students argue that this policy should change, and that calculators should be permitted on every math test. They point out that in the real world, professionals in almost every field use calculators, computers, or phones to handle calculations, so students should learn to use these tools well instead of avoiding them. A survey of one middle school found that students who used calculators regularly completed word problems faster and made fewer small arithmetic mistakes than students who worked entirely by hand.
Other teachers disagree, arguing that students first need to master basic arithmetic without a calculator so that they truly understand how numbers work. They worry that relying on calculators too early can prevent students from building number sense, a skill they will need for more advanced math later on.
A possible middle ground is to allow calculators only on tests that focus on multi-step word problems, while keeping basic computation tests calculator-free. This approach would let students practice raw number skills while still using calculators for the more complex problems they are likely to face in the real world.
-
What is the main argument made by those who support calculators on every math test?
A. Calculators should never be allowed in school.
B. Calculators should be allowed on every test because students will use similar tools in the real world.
C. Students should only use calculators in science class.
D. Teachers should stop giving math tests altogether.
-
According to the passage, what is one concern teachers have about allowing calculators on every test?
A. Calculators are too expensive for schools to buy.
B. Relying on calculators too early may prevent students from building number sense.
C. Calculators are too difficult for students to learn to use.
D. Students already understand arithmetic perfectly well.
-
What kind of evidence does the passage use to support the claim that calculators help students with word problems?
A. A quotation from a mathematician
B. A survey of one middle school
C. A personal story about a famous scientist
D. A comparison with schools in another country
-
What compromise does the passage describe?
A. Banning calculators from school completely
B. Allowing calculators only on tests with multi-step word problems, while keeping basic computation tests calculator-free
C. Giving every student a personal calculator to keep forever
D. Replacing all math tests with computer programs
-
As used in the passage, the phrase "number sense" most nearly means —
A. a fear of numbers
B. an intuitive understanding of how numbers and quantities work
C. the ability to memorize number facts quickly
D. a type of calculator function

- B — "he pressed himself flat against the wall, as still as a shadow, and refused to move"라는 문장에서, Ranger가 낯선 환경에 몹시 겁을 먹고 있음을 알 수 있습니다.
- B — "trust... could not be poured in all at once. It had to fill slowly, drop by drop"라는 비유는 Maya와 Ranger 사이의 신뢰가 한 번에 생기는 것이 아니라 시간이 지나며 서서히 쌓인다는 것을 상징합니다.
- B — "as still as a shadow"라는 직유는 Ranger가 두려움 때문에 완전히 움직이지 않고 얼어붙어 있었음을 나타냅니다.
- B — "Ranger crept out from under the table"
- B — 지문 초반 "professionals in almost every field use calculators... so students should learn to use these tools well"라는 부분에서 지지자들의 핵심 주장을 확인할 수 있습니다.
- B — "relying on calculators too early can prevent students from building number sense"
- B — "A survey of one middle school found that students who used calculators regularly completed word problems faster..."
- B — 지문 마지막 부분 "allow calculators only on tests that focus on multi-step word problems, while keeping basic computation tests calculator-free"에서 절충안을 확인할 수 있습니다.
- B — "number sense"
Part B 근거 문장: "They worry that relying on calculators too early can prevent students from building number sense, a skill they will need for more advanced math later on."
- A — "My lab partner and I"가 주어이므로 목적격 대명사 "me"가 아닌 주격 대명사 "I"를 써야 합니다.
