Wheels and Scrapes

The first time I fell off my skateboard, I was sure everyone on the block had seen it. My knee stung, my palms were scraped raw, and my board had rolled away without me like it wanted nothing to do with a beginner. I picked myself up, brushed the gravel off my shorts, and told myself it was just one fall. It wasn't.

By the end of that first week, I had fallen off more times than I could count. Each time, the same thought crept in: maybe skateboarding just wasn't for me. My older cousin, who had been skating for years, told me something I didn't want to hear. "Everybody who's good at this fell down a thousand times first," he said. "The falling is the whole point."

I kept practicing anyway, mostly because quitting felt worse than falling did. Every afternoon after homework, I rolled out to the empty parking lot behind the library and tried the same trick — an ollie, just popping the board off the ground — over and over. My confidence was a candle that kept getting blown out and relit.

Then, on a gray Thursday in October, it happened. My back foot snapped down, my front foot slid up, and for one full second, the board and I were both in the air together. I landed. It wasn't graceful, but I landed.

I didn't tell anyone right away. I just stood there in the empty lot, grinning at nothing, finally understanding what my cousin meant.

Should Students Have Homework Partners?

Most students are used to doing homework by themselves, but some teachers and researchers now suggest that assigning each student a "study buddy" — a partner to check in with about homework — could help more students succeed. Supporters point to a survey of middle school teachers in which most reported that students who studied with a partner turned in complete homework more consistently than students who worked alone. When a student gets stuck on a problem, a study buddy can offer a quick explanation instead of the student giving up entirely.

Critics of this idea worry that homework partners can become a distraction, turning a twenty-minute assignment into an hour of chatting about unrelated topics. They also argue that homework is meant to show teachers what each student understands individually, and constant partnering could hide which students are actually struggling.

A middle path some schools have tried is optional partnering: students may choose a study buddy for certain assignments, such as difficult math problem sets, while still completing most homework independently. This way, students get support exactly when they need it most, without losing the chance to practice working through problems on their own.
What is the main argument made by supporters of assigning students a study buddy?
    A. Homework should be eliminated for all students.
    B. Students with a study buddy tend to complete homework more consistently.
    C. Teachers should stop checking whether homework is finished.
    D. Working alone is always more effective than working with a partner.
According to the passage, what is one concern critics have about homework partners?
    A. Study buddies are too expensive for schools to arrange.
    B. Partnering can become a distraction and hide which students are struggling.
    C. Partners always give each other incorrect answers.
    D. Homework partners are useful only in math class.
What kind of evidence does the passage use to support the claim that homework partners help students finish assignments?
    A. A quotation from a school principal
    B. A survey of middle school teachers
    C. A comparison with schools in another country
    D. A personal story from one student
What middle-ground approach does the passage describe?
    A. Banning study buddies for every assignment
    B. Allowing optional partnering for certain assignments, such as difficult math problem sets
    C. Requiring every student to have a partner at all times
    D. Replacing all homework with in-class group work
As used in the passage, the word "consistently" most nearly means —
    A. rarely or only occasionally
    B. in a steady, reliable way over time
    C. loudly and clearly
    D. by accident

  1. B — "I was sure everyone on the block had seen it"라는 문장과 무릎이 쏠리고 손바닥이 긁힌 상황에서, 화자가 창피함과 약간의 낙담을 느꼈음을 알 수 있습니다.
  2. B — "My confidence was a candle that kept getting blown out and relit"
  3. B — "Every afternoon after homework, I rolled out to the empty parking lot behind the library and tried the same trick — an ollie... over and over"라는 문장 바로 뒤에 "Then, on a gray Thursday in October, it happened"이 이어지므로, 매일 연습하던 장면이 성공 직전의 사건임을 알 수 있습니다.
  6. B — "brushed the gravel off my shorts"
  7. B — "students who studied with a partner turned in complete homework more consistently than students who worked alone"
  8. B — "homework partners can become a distraction... and constant partnering could hide which students are actually struggling"
  9. B — "Supporters point to a survey of middle school teachers in which most reported that..."
  10. B — 지문 마지막 부분 "students may choose a study buddy for certain assignments, such as difficult math problem sets"에서 절충안(선택적 파트너 제도)을 확인할 수 있습니다.
  11. B — "turned in complete homework more consistently"
Part B 근거 문장: "students who studied with a partner turned in complete homework more consistently than students who worked alone."
  19. A — "My partner and I"가 주어이므로 목적격 대명사 "me"가 아닌 주격 대명사 "I"를 써야 합니다.
  20. A — "the stations new rescue dog"은 소방서가 소유한 구조견을 나타내므로, 소유격 아포스트로피를 넣어 "station's"로 고쳐야 합니다.
