The Note

Marcus's hands wouldn't stop shaking. In exactly four minutes, he would have to stand in front of twenty-six classmates and explain his science project on ocean currents, and his stomach felt like it had swapped places with his lungs. He had practiced in the mirror a dozen times, but the mirror had never stared back at him the way Kevin Alvarez, sitting front row with his arms crossed, definitely would.

He was still running through his opening line — Did you know the ocean has rivers inside it? — when something landed lightly on his desk. A folded scrap of paper, torn from the corner of someone's notebook.

He unfolded it under the desk, careful not to let Mr. Reyes notice. In small, careful handwriting, it said: You explained this to me at lunch and it was actually really cool. You've got this.

Marcus glanced sideways. Priya, who sat two seats over and rarely said more than a few words to anyone, was already looking back down at her own notebook, pretending she hadn't done anything at all.

"Marcus?" Mr. Reyes said. "Whenever you're ready."

Marcus stood up. His hands were still shaking a little, but the note was folded in his fist like a tiny, secret anchor. He looked out at the class, found Priya's desk, and began: "Did you know the ocean has rivers inside it?"

Should Middle Schools Have Longer Recess Periods?

Many elementary schools give students twenty or thirty minutes of recess each day, but most middle schools shrink that time to ten minutes or cut it entirely. Some parents and teachers now argue that middle school students need a longer recess period, not a shorter one. They point to research showing that short breaks during the school day improve students' focus and mood for the classes that follow. A study of one Texas school district found that students who had a fifteen-minute recess scored slightly higher on afternoon quizzes than students who had no break at all.

Other educators disagree, arguing that middle school students have more material to cover than elementary students, and that every extra minute of recess is a minute taken away from instruction time that students need to meet state standards. They also point out that unstructured free time can sometimes lead to more conflicts between students rather than fewer.

A possible compromise is what some schools call "brain breaks" — short, structured five-minute breaks built into longer class periods, rather than one long recess. This approach aims to give students the same mental reset that recess provides without removing large blocks of instructional time from the schedule.
What is the main argument made by supporters of longer recess periods?
    A. Recess should replace all classroom instruction.
    B. Short breaks improve students' focus and mood for later classes.
    C. Elementary students need more recess than middle schoolers.
    D. Recess helps students avoid taking quizzes.
According to the passage, what is one concern educators have about longer recess periods?
    A. Recess is too expensive for schools to provide.
    B. It takes away instructional time needed to meet state standards.
    C. Students do not enjoy outdoor activities.
    D. Recess is only helpful for elementary students.
What kind of evidence does the passage use to support the claim that recess improves focus?
    A. A personal story from a teacher
    B. A study of a Texas school district
    C. A quotation from a school principal
    D. A comparison to schools in other countries
What compromise does the passage describe?
    A. Eliminating recess completely
    B. Short, structured "brain breaks" built into class periods
    C. Giving recess only to students with high grades
    D. Doubling the length of the school day
As used in the passage, the word "unstructured" most nearly means —
    A. carefully planned and organized
    B. not organized or planned
    C. extremely strict
    D. related to building construction
  6. 12. (보통 · 서술형 2점, Part A/B) Part A: What is one reason some educators are against longer recess periods? Part B: Which sentence from the passage best supports your answer to Part A?

  1. B — "his stomach felt like it had swapped places with his lungs"와 같은 표현에서, Marcus가 발표를 앞두고 극도로 긴장하고 있음을 알 수 있습니다.
  2. B — Priya가 건넨 쪽지에는 "You explained this to me at lunch and it was actually really cool. You've got this."
Mr. Reyes said. "Whenever you're ready."
  6. B — "He unfolded it under the desk"
  7. B — 지문 초반 "short breaks during the school day improve students' focus and mood for the classes that follow"라는 부분에서 지지자들의 핵심 주장을 확인할 수 있습니다.
  8. B — "every extra minute of recess is a minute taken away from instruction time that students need to meet state standards"
  9. B — "A study of one Texas school district found that..."
  10. B — 지문 마지막 부분 "short, structured five-minute breaks built into longer class periods"에서 절충안("brain breaks")을 확인할 수 있습니다.
  12. Part A/B (서술형, 2점) — 예시 답안 Part A: "쉬는 시간을 늘리면 주(state) 기준에 맞추기 위해 필요한 수업 시간이 줄어들기 때문이다." Part B 근거 문장: "every extra minute of recess is a minute taken away from instruction time that students need to meet state standards."
  17. A — "Riverside Nature Center"
  19. A — "My best friend and I"가 주어이므로 목적격 대명사 "me"가 아닌 주격 대명사 "I"를 써야 합니다.
